What are stress and anxiety?
Stress is the body’s response to demand, and anxiety is its response to a demand that has not happened yet. Both are useful in small amounts and exhausting when they stay switched on, because the same alertness that helps you act also narrows how widely you can think.
Practices drawn from CBT and ACT work less by removing the feeling than by changing your relationship to it: slowing the breath, releasing the body, noticing a thought as a thought, and choosing the next small action anyway.
